Thaipusam is celebrated in several asian countries where an important Tamil community exists : Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Mauricius, Singapour, Thailand, Malaysia. It is dedicated to Murugan God, the brother of Elephant God Ganesh, son of Shiva and Parvati. It's the god of war and victory, et the commander of the Gods.
Before the festival, devotees fast and don't have sex. They shave their hair then wear very heavy stuffs, especially kavadi, a kind of decorated chariot, during the pilgrim to the ceremony temple. A lot of them practice mortifications, by putting some hooks in their skin or their tongue. It's a way to always remember the God, not to speak and increase stamina.
Thaipusam is celebrated at different periods regarding the country. In Batu caves close to Kuala Lumpur, more than one million devotees and tens of thousands tourists are there.
